Regulations for Bulky Items

Do you need to schedule Bulky Items?

To help Brookline’s Department of Public Works provide quality and efficient service, while keeping Brookline streets clean, please help in adhering to our regulations regarding BULKY ITEMS.

What is a bulky item:

Furniture, mattresses, bed frames and box springs, carpets, large kitchen appliances, bicycles, TV’s, and metal items. Please call if you have questions on certain items (617)730-2156.

What I need to do:

1) If you subscribe for town trash/recycling services, please call Brookline’s Department of Public Works at (617)730-2156 to schedule a free pickup. You must call one week in advance of your next trash and recycling pick-up. Collections will be made by appointment only!
2) Place your item out after 3 pm the day before and no later than 7 am on the day of your collection.
3) Please make sure your bulky item is directly next to your trash. Do not obstruct any road or sidewalk.

What will happen if I do not call ahead:

1) Bulky items not called in and placed out for pick-up will be given a 24 hour warning notice.
2) If the item is still out after the 24 hours, the resident will be given a fine and the bulky item will be picked up by the Department of Public Works.

Are there are items that are not accepted:

This is for bulky items only. No construction material or wood will be accepted! Please see our list of private haulers on the Department of Public Work’s website if you need a pickup for these items.

Alternatives for bulky items and textiles:

Brookline has numerous charitable organizations and there are many in our neighboring communities that you can donate to. It helps cut down on overall waste and also helps those in need!
