Green Line D Branch Track & Signal Replacements

Starting in mid-September, the MBTA will begin construction on a project to replace signals and sections of track along the Green Line D Branch from Riverside to Beaconsfield stations.  Learn more about this project and how to sign up for email updates.


About the Project

Timeline: 2018-2020
Status: Construction

This project is part of the MBTA initiative to bring the Green Line track and signal systems into a state of good repair.

Goals

  • Replace approximately 6.5 miles of signal infrastructure
  • Replace 25,000 feet of track
  • Replace special trackwork between Beaconsfield and Riverside stations

Project Features

  • Signal equipment will be centralized at stations
  • Modern electronics will replace antiquated, obsolete signal equipment
  • Continuous welded rail will replace jointed rail

Benefits

  • Modern signal system will be less likely to fail, resulting in fewer delays
  • Reduction in signal failures and response times
  • Fewer signal delays will increase reliability of Green Line operations
  • Maintenance of Way will be able to remove speed restrictions on the D branch

Late Evening Bus Shuttles (Sunday – Thursday)

During select months, bus shuttles will replace train service on any of the following portions of the D branch, Sunday – Thursday, starting at 9 PM:

  • Brookline Hills to Newton Highlands
  • Reservoir to Newton Highlands
  • Newton Highlands to Riverside

Year 2018 - Affected Months are September - December

Year 2019 - Affected Months are April - December

Year 2020 - Affected Months are April - December


Weekend Bus Shuttles (Saturday and Sunday)

Additionally, over 15 weekends in 2019 and 2020, bus shuttles will replace train service on any of the following portions of the D branch all day Saturday and Sunday:

  • Brookline Hills to Newton Highlands
  • Reservoir to Newton Highlands
  • Newton Highlands to Riverside
  • Reservoir to Riverside
