Police Officers and Firefighters
The Town of Brookline hires Police Officers and Firefighters through the Massachusetts Civil Service system. Applicants are encouraged to take the appropriate Civil Service exam which is administered by the Massachusetts Human Resources Division.
When applicants are needed the Town requests a list of candidates which is compiled and certified by HRD. The Town of Brookline uses the residency preference system for police officer and firefighter positions, giving preference to candidates who reside in Brookline for one year prior to the date of the civil service exam. This process and the exam schedules are available at the HRD website.
Labor Service
Labor Service positions include laborers, skilled laborers, mechanics and craftsmen in the Department of Public Works. These positions are hired through the Massachusetts Civil Service system. The Labor Service is based on registration rather than on a written examination. Candidates are considered for employment in the order of their registration with the Town of Brookline.
