Brookline Department of Public Works provides the foundation for a sustainable, inclusive, connected, vibrant, safe and livable community.
To enhance the quality of life in Brookline as responsible stewards of the public's physical assets, infrastructure and natural resources by providing outstanding service in partnership with the community. We design, build, manage, maintain, protect and improve the Town's utilities (water, sewer, and stormwater), infrastructure and public spaces (public right-of-way, parks, public grounds and civic spaces) with skill, pride, equity, innovation and responsiveness. We provide reliable, cost-effective, high-quality services that protect public health, maintain customer confidence and support a prosperous economy.
The Department of Public Works provides foundational support for the daily activities of the community. The Department provides services, programs and projects that protect the safety and welfare of the public, balance community goals for livability, inclusivity, and economic vitality, and fulfill local, state, and federal mandates.
The Brookline Department of Public Works is responsible for the planning, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and management of streets, sidewalks, bicycle/multi-modal accommodations, parks, playgrounds, school grounds, public grounds, cemeteries, conservation areas, water distribution systems, sewer collection systems, stormwater utility, street lights, signage and signalization. The Department is also responsible for the collection, and disposal of solid waste, and recycling, urban forestry, environmental regulatory compliance, emergency response, snow and ice management, policy and regulations, inspectional services, technical project review, land plan management, and fleet maintenance services to Town departments. The power of Public Works is in advancing the quality of life for everyone in our community. The Department is organized into five divisions with general services, functions and deliverables as described in this plan.
