About Bulky Item Pickup Service
For residents on Town waste collection service, the Dept. of Public Works offers a special collection service for up to four (4) bulky and metal items per week. Bulky and metal items typically classify as a piece of furniture or an appliance. This includes couches, white goods, stoves, refrigerators, air conditioners, CRTs, TVs, etc.
Bulky and metal items are collected on a resident’s regular waste collection day, by appointment only. Appointments must be made one week in advance of your regular trash pickup and paid for in advance (see bulky item collection fees below). Please note there is a non-refundable service fee for credit card payments made online. If you require assistance, please email [email protected] or call the Department of Public Works at (617) 730-2156.
Construction/remodeling materials, automobile parts, and gym equipment are all ineligible for a special pickup request. These items should instead be removed by a private waste hauler. Tires, electronics and small appliances (such as microwaves) can be brought to the Town’s Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Facility at Brookline’s Transfer Station (815 Newton Street) at no cost. The facility is open every Tuesday from May 2nd, 2023 to October 31st, 2023 from 7:30 AM – 12:30 PM. Follow this link for more information on Hazardous Waste Drop Off. We encourage you to try to donate or sell any furniture or appliances that are in good condition, as this is almost always the most sustainable disposal method.
Overflow Trash Bags
Residents who are on our Town's trash service may purchase overflow bags for the weeks that they have more garbage than usual. Up to ten of the purple overflow bags marked with Brookline's seal may be placed out for collection in addition to the usual refuse bins on your regularly scheduled garbage day.
Residents must use the Town's marked purple overflow bags and not their own separately purchased trash bags.
Brookline's purple overflow bags may be purchased from Town Hall at 333 Washington St or from the local stores below.

The Town of Brookline’s Department of Public Works will provide a Trash Amnesty pick up week twice a year as part of Brookline’s Hybrid Pay-As-You-Throw Trash (HPAYT) Program. Residents on the Town’s trash service will be permitted to dispose of extra bags of household waste and up to four (4) bulky items (such as sofas, mattresses, TVs and appliances) alongside their town-issued trash cart on their scheduled trash pickup day. This bi-annual service will occur each year on the weeks following Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend.
Trash Amnesty Week provides Brookline residents with an opportunity to dispose of any extra waste without incurring a fee for overflow trash bags or bulky item collection. This bi-annual observance ensures all Brookline residents have access to responsible waste disposal services for their excess waste. Please do not place any items out for pick-up before 3:30 PM the day before your scheduled trash day.
For Amnesty Week ONLY, bulky items should be called in and scheduled for pickup at 617-730-2156 to ensure bulky item collection fees are waived. Residents who schedule bulky item collection online will be charged the standard collection fee(s). If you have questions about Bulky Item collection in Brookline, please call 617-730-2156 or email [email protected].
Construction and demolition waste will not be accepted. Household hazardous waste items, such as flammable materials, should be brought to the Town’s Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Facility at 815 Newton Street on Tuesdays between the hours of 7:30 am and 12:30 pm. Additional information on what items are accepted at the Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Facility can be found online here. Yard waste pickups will occur as normal on your pickup day.
Please direct any questions or concerns to the Department of Public Works at 617-730-2156.
