Larz Anderson Roadway Improvements
Skating Rink Notice December 11, 2023
With the opening of the Jack Kirrane Ice Rink, we ask that all ice rink visitors please follow all site signage directing them to appropriate parking and traffic patterns. The road is closed between the end of the first parking lot to Avon Street. Because of this closure, the roadway will now have a two-way traffic pattern, entering and exiting to/from Newton Street. Please see the traffic map here.
Work will pick back up in the spring. We regret the disturbance this construction project has caused for park users. We thank you for your patience and cooperation throughout this process. We look forward to completing the project and seeing it available for your enjoyment by the beginning of this summer. Please feel free to contact our team for any comments or questions you may have.

Given increasingly cold and unfavorable conditions on site, work has ended for the season. The contractor will come back in the spring for remaining work to be done. There is currently full access to the park roadway.
The final stretch of Phase 2 of paving has been completed from the ice rink parking lot areas up to the summit parking lot. Phase 3 of binder has been completed on down-hill stretch from summit to Avon St. park exit.

The contractors are finishing Phase 3 of full depth reconstruction on the Avon St. side, downhill from the summit. The already paved areas from Phase 1 and 2 are being prepared for final paving in the next 2 weeks. Curbing has been installed along the sides of the road near parking areas and throughout the road. Work will be concluding for the season in the next 3-4 weeks.

The contractor is finishing the excavation and grading of phase 2 of the roadway. Phase 2 starts at the rink entry and continues to the top of the hill. After that work is completed the first course of paving (the binder course) will then be put down. The contractor will then be finishing some drainage work along phase 1 to get that portion of the road prepared for curbing and the final paving. Once Phase 1 and Phase 2 are completed the contractor will move onto the excavation and grading for Phase 3 of the roadway. Phase 3 starts at the top of the hill and continues down to the exit on Avon Street. After all three phases have the binder courses down the entire road will be paved with the final top coat. Work is anticipated to continue until early December. The contractor will be returning in the spring for any touch up work and to seed along the edge of the roadway.

Work is well underway at Larz Anderson Park. The contractor is currently working on the installation of drainage structures and pipes along the park road. After that work is complete, they will move on to full-depth excavation, grading, and paving. This work is currently planned for late September into October and will require a complete shutdown of the roadway through the park.
At this time park access is being maintained by Newton St. or Avon St. entrances. Alternative access by Goddard Ave. entrance.
Visitors should expect work Monday- Friday and be prepared for detours or partial closures of park road. When the road is closed the below detour map will be implemented.
July 20, 2023
Work has started at the park with the erosion control and tree protection installed. The contractor also completed all the saw cutting for the drainage work. There will be no construction activity next week and then the following week the contractor will be back on site to start the drainage improvements along the roadway. That work will be followed by the removal and reclaiming of the roadway to prepare it for paving.

The construction will soon commence on the roadway replacement at Larz Anderson Park. The project scope consists of the following:
- Removal and disposal of the existing bituminous asphalt roadway surfacing;
- Improvements to the drainage;
- Installation of new bituminous asphalt roadway surfacing;
While we are excited to start this renovation in earnest, we realize that a major construction effort, such as this, is disruptive in many ways. As always, we will try our best to minimize negative impacts during construction and be responsive to unforeseen conditions as needed.
The contractor, Mass Pavement Reclamation, will mobilize in early July. The park and roadway will remain open during most of the construction except for a few weeks where the roadway will be completely shut down. This period is tentatively planned to start on August 22nd; however, that is subject to change based on material availability. Please visit this site to stay up to date with the project schedule.
Again, we appreciate the disruption any construction project entails, and thank you for your patience and cooperation. We look forward to seeing the new roadways surface open and available for your use. Please feel free to contact our Senior Landscape Architect, Jessie Waisnor, if you have any questions at 617-730-2616 or [email protected].
