Goals

The Planning Board’s primary goal is to guide the physical growth and development of the Town of Brookline through the adoption and implementation of a master plan, consideration of zoning bylaw amendments, and evaluation and recommendation on land use changes, development projects, commercial signs and facades, and the siting of wireless telecommunication facilities.

The Regulatory Planning Division provides support to the Planning Board by analyzing and making recommendations on applications to the Zoning Board of Appeals, as well as offering professional planning guidance on long-term planning initiatives and zoning amendment efforts.

Planning Board decisions are based on established criteria, guidelines and standards defined by the Zoning By-Law (PDF) Key objectives include:

  • Addressing quality of life issues, such as traffic congestion, housing, and open space
  • Supporting small businesses
  • Enhancing the affordable housing supply
  • Encouraging capital improvements to properties

The Board encourages and facilitates public review and comment at all of its meetings. The Planning Board’s aim is to protect and enhance the overall appearance and livability of the town. Review the Planning Board Rules and Regulations.

Design Advisory Teams

The Planning Board creates Design Advisory Teams to assist them in reviewing some larger development projects called Major Impact Projects. Design Advisory Teams consist of Planning Board members, design professionals, and neighbors. View information about current or previous Major Impact Projects.
