Select Board Seeks Applications for Pierce School Building Committee
The Brookline Select Board is pleased to invite applications from community members who wish to serve on the Pierce School Building Committee. This project is part of the Town’s ongoing effort to address the historic enrollment growth, overcrowding, and substandard facilities in the Public Schools of Brookline.
Brookline will be working in partnership with the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) during this project and will follow the MSBA’s process for school building design and construction.

Brookline officially entered MSBA’s Eligibility Period for the Pierce project in June. One of the first milestones in the process is for the Select Board to name a School Building Committee that will monitor and provide guidance during design and construction. The Pierce School Building Committee will advise the Building Commission, Select Board, and School Committee; work with the Project Manager in support of the project; and help to engage and inform the public. Building Committees serve through the Design Feasibility, Schematic Design, and Construction Phases. Committees typically meet 1 or 2 times per month over that time frame (typically 4 years).

The Pierce School Building Committee will include community members representing parents, community members, Town Meeting Members, the Building Commission, Select Board, School Committee, Advisory Committee, and Park and Recreation Commission, as well as Town and School Department staff. The MSBA recommends naming building committee members who have experience in architecture, engineering, and/or construction.

The first meeting of the Pierce School Building Committee is not expected to happen until mid to late August 2019. Residents who are interested in serving on the Pierce School Building Committee are asked to submit a letter of interest and resume by 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 to:

Town Administrator’s Office
333 Washington Street
Brookline, MA 02445
[email protected]

The school building committee must be formed in accordance with the provisions of all applicable local by-laws, charters, and agreements. The MSBA requires the following roles to be represented on the School Building Committee. More than one person can fulfill a specific role:

Select Board Member
School Committee Member
Building Commission Member
Advisory Committee Member or local budget official
Town Administrator or Manager
Superintendent of Schools
School Principal
A member who is certified by the Massachusetts Certified Public Purchasing Official Program
Local official responsible for building maintenance
A member knowledgeable in educational mission and function of facility
Members of the community with architecture, engineering, and/or construction experience
