Green Line D Branch Overnight Construction Begins October 8

The MBTA’s contractor, Barletta-Fischbach, is scheduled to begin overnight work on the Green Line D Track and Signal Replacement Project on Monday, October 8. Work will take place in Brookline on Sunday through Thursday nights through December 28, 2018. Work will also occur on select weekends in November/December in Brookline. Depending on progress in Brookline, overnight work could begin in Newton (between Newton Highlands and Riverside) in November/December.   Learn more about this project, impacts to neighboring residents and businesses, impacts to Green Line Riders, and how to sign up for email updates.


About the Project

Timeline: 2018-2020
Status: Construction

This project is part of the MBTA initiative to bring the Green Line track and signal systems into a state of good repair.

Goals

  • Replace approximately 6.5 miles of signal infrastructure
  • Replace 25,000 feet of track
  • Replace special trackwork between Beaconsfield and Riverside stations

Project Features

  • Signal equipment will be centralized at stations
  • Modern electronics will replace antiquated, obsolete signal equipment
  • Continuous welded rail will replace jointed rail

Benefits

  • Modern signal system will be less likely to fail, resulting in fewer delays
  • Reduction in signal failures and response times
  • Fewer signal delays will increase reliability of Green Line operations
  • Maintenance of Way will be able to remove speed restrictions on the D branch

Late Evening Bus Shuttles (Sunday – Thursday)

During select months, bus shuttles will replace train service on any of the following portions of the D branch, Sunday – Thursday, starting at 9 PM:

  • Brookline Hills to Newton Highlands
  • Reservoir to Newton Highlands
  • Newton Highlands to Riverside

Year 2018 - Affected Months are September - December

Year 2019 - Affected Months are April - December

Year 2020 - Affected Months are April - December


Weekend Bus Shuttles (Saturday and Sunday)

Additionally, over 15 weekends in 2019 and 2020, bus shuttles will replace train service on any of the following portions of the D branch all day Saturday and Sunday:

  • Brookline Hills to Newton Highlands
  • Reservoir to Newton Highlands
  • Newton Highlands to Riverside
  • Reservoir to Riverside
