[ARCHIVED] Retail goods and sandwich boards on sidewalks, streamlined outdoor seating approvals...

Businesses now allowed to display retail goods and sandwich boards on the public sidewalks if certain conditions are met

Earlier today, the Brookline Department of Public Works (DPW) Commissioner, in consultation with the Economic Development Division, issued two orders allowing for the use of the public sidewalk for sandwich boards and retail goods. These orders are part of the Town’s overall strategy to re-imagine and re-purpose our public spaces in support of our local businesses as they begin to re-open as part of Phases 2 & 3 and will be in effect until November 15, 2020. Businesses interested in displaying sandwich boards or retail goods in the public way need to comply with the requirements outlined in the DPW orders and submit a copy of their certificate of general liability insurance to Todd Kirrane, Transportation Administrator, at [email protected]. Todd Kirrane will be available to answer questions about these two new initiatives at tomorrow’s Virtual Town Hall meeting (see meeting info below).

Streamlined approvals for outdoor seating requests

The Town of Brookline has made it much easier for restaurants to get outdoor seating, and will continue to work with the business community and the Brookline community at-large to identify and implement new and creative uses of Brookline’s public spaces in support of the Brookline community. As of the start of Phase 2 last week, any Brookline restaurant approved for outdoor seating through their Common Victuallers license was able to put out their outdoor seating. For restaurants that did not have approval for outdoor seating, last week, the Select Board approved an expedited outdoor seating approval process. Restaurants interested in creating outdoor seating on the sidewalk or parking spaces directly in front of their storefronts are able to seek approval through a new, streamlined process. No public hearing required, no abutter notification required, and no application fees. Applications will be reviewed at the staff level, reducing the typical application approval window from three weeks to one week. Existing restaurants interested in seeking this expedited outdoor seating approval should contact the Town’s Senior Licensing Clerk, Tiffany Souza at [email protected]. More information available at:

Inquiries about creating outdoor dining common areas or other creative ways of re-purposing public space, should be directed to Kara Brewton, Director of Economic Development, at [email protected].
