1. How is the three-day waiting period counted?

Weekends and holidays do count towards the three days, but not the day the application is made. For example, if
you apply on Friday, you can pick up your license on Monday.

2. Can you waive the three-day waiting period?

If you are unable to wait the three days and need your license issued immediately, both parties must apply for a waiver at the probate court. After a hearing, the court may issue an approved Court Petition for Marriage Without Delay allowing the marriage license to be issued. The certificate must be brought back to the Town Clerk.

3. Do I have to pick up my marriage license in-person?

Yes, you must pick up your license in-person prior to the ceremony. We do not mail marriage licenses prior to the ceremony. (Sorry, no exceptions).

Please remember that you must pick up the license before your marriage ceremony; the person performing the marriage cannot legally marry you without it.

4. What is the minimum age to marry?

Massachusetts law requires the parties to be 18 years of age or older to file a Notice of Intention of Marriage. A photo ID
or birth certificate is required to show proof of minimum age.

5. Are blood tests still required to get married?

No. Pursuant to Chapter 388 of the Acts of 2004, blood tests are no longer required for any couple applying for their Marriage License on or after January 28, 2005.

6. Do we need proof of residency?

No, proof of residency is no longer required. The Marriage Intention is being
signed under the pains and penalties of perjury.
